سلطنة عُمان
(Sultanate of Oman)
البنك المركزي العماني
(Central Bank of Oman)
Currency : Rial (OMR)
This is a 50 rials Hybrid note issued in July 2020. This note was released as a commemorative banknote, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the rise of the Modern
Omani Renaissance, and also in memory of its founder, the late Sultan
Qaboos bin Said bin Taimur (b.1940-2020). Sultan Qaboos ruled
Oman between 1970 to 2020.
As
per previous Omani 50 rials banknotes issued, this note depicts the
portrait of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said and the facade of the
Central Bank of Oman building on the front and buildings of the Council
of Oman, the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Finance on the back. This note is printed with the year date of 1441 A.H. (2020).
In 1970, Qaboos succeeded his father, Sultan Said bin Taimur (b.1910-1972) following a coup d'etat, when he was barely 30 years old. He then went on and ruled Oman until his death in 2020. Sultan Qaboos was the only son of Sultan Said bin Taimur. While Sultan Qaboos married twice, he had no children of his own when he died.
The portrait design of the late sultan for this issue is slightly different for the last issue. The headgear design is also not the same and the predominantly colour of this note is green whilst the previous 50 rials was printed in light brown colour. If you look closely at the portrait, you can also see that the sultan is facing more directly at you as compared to previous issues. The 50 rials are still the largest denomination of banknote issued in Oman.

This 50 rials formed part of the sixth series of banknotes. Since this note was issued first and is also a commemorative note, I have decided to post this note first and then post the remaining of the series later.
